Pub at Risk
Future hope for Magdala
Jason Bevan of Belsize Park Gardens NW3 writes:
The prospect of the closure of the Magdala Tavern as reported here last month has prompted much concern amongst locals, and residents of South End Green and beyond. The pressure on community assets and amenities is pervasive, and the prospect of losing another is keenly felt, but strength of feeling of those affected can be harnessed and much can be achieved through collective action, as demonstrated by the success of the campaign to keep local diversity, over Sainsbury’s homogeneity.
To that end a new group, The Friends of the Magdala, met with the South End Green Association(SEGA) this week to discuss areas of common concern and have agreed to work together in the event that a campaign becomes necessary.
Whilst I am encouraged that the new owners stated intention is to reopen the Magdala as a pub, it will close September 7th making it difficult to disseminate news as it arises. For those interested there will be notices posted both on SEGA’s notice boards, and a new informational website at www.friendsofthemagdala.co.uk .
